Training begins at the age of seven, when the young aspirant is trained as a page. Around the age of fourteen, weapons and horsemanship training are focused on and the Squire is expected to follow his master into battle if needed. By the age of twenty one, a prospective candidate is expected to have impressed his master sufficiently to earn his recommendation. \r\nFollowing the sweeping reforms of Charles Armatellum at the onset of his conquests, the ceremony of dubbing can only be performed by an Imperial noble of at least the rank of Margrave or Count Palatine. The anointment, moreover, can only take place after a battle in which the prospective knight has blooded his blade. These mandates were established to ensure that only men of true prowess earned the rank of Knight. Even with the Empire dissolved, those mandates are well preserved traditions and those who ignore them meet ridicule. Capable of consuming any biomass, especially the fallen, in order to produce their nectar, these disgusting creatures are a backbone of the Spire war engine, massively easing the supply requirements of the Spire forces on the field.  \r\n\r\nAfter witnessing a Force Grown Drone, one could imagine that they are a byproduct of some other Biomantic process gone awry. Nothing could be further from the truth; the design of their strains represents a groundbreaking triumph for the Biomancers. The end result is a being that can be gestated within a week and kept dormant until quickened. In meantime, they can be stored within vast racks in the massive storage caverns of the Underspire. When requested, entire racks of these dormant drones can be hitched on to massive, tented, cathedral-like wagons, pulled by dozens of the Brute Drones. This resource efficiency makes these drones even more alarming when deployed by the Merchant Princes, who can transfer massive numbers with their airship fleets behind enemy lines. They are lowered, armor and all, into a vat with hyper aggressive muscle and bone augmentation agents. Coupled with hormonal growth treatments, the result is impressive, if limited. Body mass can triple in as little as two months of immersion, but the pain and trauma of the process severely impairs the already limited mental faculties of the drones.\r\n\r\n The massive armors they are immersed with are soon filled out completely, stunting further growth and provoking increasing amounts of pain on the nascent Brutes. Once the pain is intense enough to overcome the sedating agents added to the vat mixture, the Brute is considered fully grown and decanted, before its mad thrashings harm the rest of the batch. The process could be far more compassionate and effective, but time and practice have shown this to be the most resource efficient method to develop these front line shock troops. The monstrously high fail rate amongst the menial drones is more than compensated for by the tremendously reduced cost and oversight. \r\n\r\nTowering well over two meters, with most specimens touching the three meter mark, Brute Drones are a towering mass of vat grown muscle and aggression. Their skin, where it can be seen beneath the ichor soaked bandages they bear, is a ravaged mass of scar tissue and subdermal bone deposits. Their armor is literally sealed onto their bodies, held in place by alchemically treated cartouches that establish Lineage ownership, lot number and enhancement date of the particular drone.\r\n\r\nOn the battlefield, Brute Drones are little more than living battering rams. Despite significant effort, even the Sovereign’s most ardent opponents have not been able to come up with a more cruel punishment and have adopted this cruel torture for their worst enemies.\r\n\r\nInvasive cerebral procedures impairs the cognitive function of the condemned, as chemical and hormonal treatments are applied to make them lose control of their Life-Binding gifts and forcibly bond them to a lower organism. Multiple organisms were proposed and tried but the humble ant was ultimately preferred. While more gruesome examples could be made, it was found that those Abominations bonded to other species were too intractable or self-destructive.
